Australia’s First Shared Electric Truck Charging Hub Breaks Ground in Melbourne, Linking Three Major Logistics Corridors

Melbourne’s West Launches Australia’s First Electric Truck Charging Network

Construction has officially begun on Australia’s first shared charging hub designed for heavy- and medium-duty electric trucks in Laverton North, Melbourne’s west. The milestone marks a critical step in building the nation’s first electric truck charging network. The hub is being developed by infrastructure provider NewVolt with AUD 25 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), a federal government initiative, and will serve as a central node linking Melbourne’s three major logistics corridors.

The Laverton North charging hub is strategically located at the intersection of the M80 Ring Road and the M1 Westgate Freeway, at the heart of Melbourne’s western freight precinct. NewVolt plans to install 12 high-power charging bays tailored for heavy- and medium-duty electric trucks, equipped with 24-hour operational facilities and rest areas. The charging system will offer fast charging up to 400 kW and will include space for future expansion to megawatt charging systems (MCS) to accommodate larger electric trucks as demand grows.

Expected to Open in Early 2027, Supporting Over 100 Charging Sessions Daily

Rainer Knobloch, co-founder of NewVolt, announced on August 10 via social media that the Laverton North charging hub is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2027, with the capacity to support more than 100 charging sessions per day. Knobloch stated that the hub will significantly enhance the operational efficiency of electric trucks and provide logistics operators with more convenient charging solutions.

Construction of the Laverton North hub is now fully underway, though the timeline for deploying megawatt charging systems (MCS) remains unconfirmed. NewVolt emphasized that MCS technology will offer greater flexibility for the future development of electric trucks, though specific details on its implementation are yet to be disclosed.

Three Hubs to Cover Melbourne’s Primary Logistics Corridors

The Laverton North charging hub is only the first of three planned by NewVolt. According to the project, two additional hubs will be built in Melbourne’s northern freight precinct and south-east region, forming a triangular network covering the city’s key logistics corridors. The AUD 25 million provided by ARENA will support the entire project, though details on funding allocation for each hub have not been released.

As Australia’s largest freight hub, Melbourne’s western, northern, and south-eastern corridors handle nearly 40% of the nation’s road freight volume. NewVolt stated that once all three charging hubs are completed, they will substantially lower the barriers to electrification for logistics operators and improve the operational efficiency of electric trucks. Since its founding in 2019, the company has focused on charging solutions for electric trucks and public transport, and this project is seen as a major milestone in its commercial vehicle initiatives.

While construction of the charging hubs is progressing smoothly, questions remain about the timeline for the remaining two hubs, the specifics of the 24-hour operational services, and how the ARENA funding will be distributed. Neither NewVolt nor ARENA has released details on the fleet customers, partners, or suppliers involved in the project. Industry observers anticipate that as the charging network expands, the adoption of electric trucks in Australia will accelerate.
