Telo Boosts MT1 Mini Electric Truck Tow Rating to 8,000 Pounds, Matching Base Ford F-150

Telo has increased the maximum tow rating of its MT1 electric truck from 6,600 pounds to 8,000 pounds, matching the base Ford F-150. Significant Tow Rating Increase Targets Traditional Pickup Market

U.S. electric vehicle startup Telo announced on August 7 that it has raised the maximum tow rating of its compact electric truck, the MT1, from 6,600 pounds (approximately 3 metric tons) to 8,000 pounds (approximately 3.6 metric tons), reaching the level of a base Ford F-150. Forest North, co-founder and CTO of Telo, stated that this adjustment resulted from months of real-world towing tests, proving the MT1’s performance far exceeds expectations for its size.

The MT1 measures just 152 inches (approximately 3.86 meters) in length, comparable to an electric Mini Cooper, yet its towing capacity nearly matches that of a full-size pickup. Telo emphasizes that this achievement is due to the inherent advantages of electric vehicles in power delivery and thermal management, as well as a meticulously designed vehicle structure. The MT1 starts at $41,520, with deliveries expected to begin in late 2026.

Electric Powertrain Advantages Redefine Towing Logic

In a video announcement, Forest North detailed the technical foundation behind the MT1’s increased tow rating. First, the electric vehicle’s regenerative braking system can continuously recover energy on long downhill stretches, reducing the burden on the braking system. North noted, "Over several miles of downhill driving, we relied entirely on regenerative braking to control speed without using traditional brakes, yet maintained stable vehicle handling."

Second, electric vehicles offer superior instant torque delivery and thermal efficiency compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. North explained that the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J2807 towing test standard was primarily designed for gasoline vehicles, with a particular focus on heat dissipation under prolonged high loads. However, electric vehicles are not constrained by thermal engine limitations. The MT1’s 500-horsepower dual-motor system can provide ample power instantly, making starting and hill climbing effortless.

The MT1’s body structure also plays a critical role in supporting its increased towing capacity. The vehicle features a steel chassis and reinforced crossbeams, weighing over 4,000 pounds to ensure structural integrity. The trailer hitch is positioned close to the rear axle, shortening the lever arm and reducing the impact of trailer weight on front-end lift. North believes the MT1’s compact size allows it to achieve the same strength with less weight, offering an advantage over larger pickups.

Targeting the Electric Trailer Market with Short-Distance Towing as Key Scenario

Telo has positioned the MT1 to meet short-distance towing needs, such as camping, light cargo transport, and outdoor recreational activities. North acknowledged that for long-haul heavy towing, large diesel trucks remain the preferred choice, but the MT1’s advantages lie in its parking convenience and maneuverability. The vehicle comes standard with a 77 kWh battery pack, offering a range of 260 miles (approximately 420 kilometers), while an optional 106 kWh battery pack extends the range to over 350 miles (approximately 560 kilometers). The bed length is adjustable between 60 and 96 inches (approximately 1.5 to 2.4 meters), and the cabin seats up to five.

Another key factor behind the increase to an 8,000-pound tow rating is the rise of the electric travel trailer market. In July, Telo demonstrated the MT1 towing Pebble’s Flow electric travel trailer, which weighs 5,800 pounds and features an active propulsion system that reduces the load on the tow vehicle through its own motor and regenerative braking. North stated that many new electric travel trailers weigh between 6,000 and 8,000 pounds, and the MT1’s updated tow rating meets this demand.

The MT1 also supports sustained 400 kW charging, utilizing a dual 800V/400V battery architecture. This means the vehicle can recover significant energy through regenerative braking on downhill stretches, complementing its high-power charging capability and further enhancing its practicality in towing scenarios.

Market Positioning and Challenges

Compared to traditional gasoline pickups, the 2025 Ford F-150’s base 2.7-liter V6 model offers a tow rating of approximately 8,400 pounds. The MT1’s 8,000-pound rating approaches this level, yet the MT1 is only two-thirds the length of an F-150 and priced lower. Currently, no other electric pickup on the market competes directly with the MT1 in terms of size and price.

However, the MT1’s market prospects face several challenges. First, it remains uncertain whether traditional pickup buyers will accept such a compact vehicle. Second, Telo plans to begin deliveries in late 2026, but whether the startup can achieve mass production with limited funding remains to be seen. To date, Telo has raised approximately $20 million, with its Series A funding led by Tesla co-founder Marc Tarpenning.

Additionally, specifications like tow ratings often become more conservative during mass production due to liability and warranty considerations. Telo has not yet released third-party test reports or SAE J2807 certification results, so the actual towing performance awaits market validation. While the MT1 has demonstrated excellent performance in prototype testing, whether the production model can maintain the same standards will be critical to its market success.
