E5 Plus Right-Hand Drive Debuts in Indonesia as DFSK Strengthens Southeast Asian Market Presence

DFSK officially introduced the right-hand drive version of its E5 Plus plug-in hybrid SUV on August 10 at the 2026 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show in Tangerang. This marks the model’s first entry into a right-hand drive market. DFSK stated that the launch represents a significant milestone in its Southeast Asian market strategy, with Indonesia serving as a base to further expand into right-hand drive markets such as Thailand and Malaysia.

The E5 Plus is equipped with Seres Group’s Super Hybrid System, combining a 25.3-kilowatt-hour battery pack with a gasoline engine. Under the NEDC standard, it offers up to 140 kilometers of pure electric driving range and a total range of 1,400 kilometers. This design addresses the uneven charging infrastructure in Southeast Asia, allowing consumers to use pure electric mode for daily city commutes while switching to hybrid power for long-distance travel, effectively alleviating charging concerns.

Six-Seat Configuration and Multilingual Interface Cater to Local Preferences

To align with Indonesian consumers’ preference for large family vehicles, the Indonesian-spec E5 Plus features a six-seat cabin layout with independent second-row seating. It also includes an adaptive frequency selective damping system to enhance ride comfort on local road conditions. The digital cockpit interface supports five regional languages—Bahasa Indonesia, Thai, Malay, Vietnamese, and Traditional Chinese—and integrates services such as Apple CarPlay and Spotify, addressing earlier shortcomings in software localization among Chinese automakers.

In terms of safety, the Indonesian-spec E5 Plus comes standard with active safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane centering control, and lane departure warnings. These are enabled by five millimeter-wave radar units, 22 sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system. The vehicle’s underbody transparency feature also assists drivers in navigating narrow or unpaved roads by helping them avoid obstacles.

Local Assembly in West Java Aligns with Indonesian Policy and Expands Export Potential

DFSK assembles the E5 Plus at Seres Group’s manufacturing facility in Cikarang, West Java, complying with Indonesia’s local content requirements. Indonesia holds the world’s largest nickel reserves, a critical material for lithium-ion battery production. By localizing production, DFSK not only benefits from tax incentives but also aligns with Indonesia’s goal of becoming a production hub for electric and hybrid vehicles in ASEAN. The West Java plant is also positioned as an export base for right-hand drive models, with future shipments planned for markets including Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, and South Africa.

Ahead of the auto show, DFSK reported over 1,200 pre-orders for the E5 Plus, reflecting strong market demand for a high-capacity, competitively priced hybrid SUV. Amy Gong, President of DFSK, stated during the event that the company will continue to deepen its long-term investment in Indonesia by expanding its sales and service network and enhancing localized research and development. DFSK entered the Indonesian market in 2017, initially focusing on commercial vans and light trucks before shifting its strategy under Seres Group to prioritize passenger SUVs and electrified platforms.

Chinese Brands Challenge Japanese Dominance as Competition Intensifies in Southeast Asia

The Southeast Asian automotive market has long been dominated by Japanese brands such as Toyota, Honda, and Mitsubishi, which hold over 80 percent market share. However, as Chinese automakers introduce more competitively priced electrified models, the dominance of Japanese brands is gradually being challenged. Unlike BYD and Wuling, which focus on affordable pure electric vehicles, DFSK has targeted the family SUV segment, catering to Southeast Asian consumers’ priorities, including passenger capacity, air conditioning performance, and long-term resale value.

Seres Group currently operates in over 70 countries and regions worldwide. As governments across Southeast Asia tighten emissions standards and offer incentives for local assembly, the launch of the right-hand drive E5 Plus reflects how global automotive trade patterns are adapting to regional industrial policies. DFSK’s expansion in Indonesia represents not only an extension of its product strategy but also a critical step in the broader push by Chinese automakers to establish a stronger foothold in the Southeast Asian market.
